An assessment offers understanding and insight About How Your Child Learns
As a parent, it’s heartbreaking to watch your child struggle, knowing they are trying their best but are still falling behind. You might feel overwhelmed, frustrated, and unsure of how to help, or are dealing with a school that doesn’t understand your child’s needs.
During this time your child or teen may feel lost, frustrated and despite their best efforts, aren’t able to keep up with their peers academically or socially. They might feel different, isolated or not smart because they learn differently.
When to seek a psychoeducational assessment
Your child or teen may benefit from a psychoeducational assessment if they struggle with:
- Reading or writing
- Sensory sensitivities
- Going to school
- Bouts of hyperactivity
- Being able to pay attention
- Being easily distracted
- Math
- Low self-esteem
- Feeling different than everyone else
- Making & keeping friends
- Being easily bored (gifted kids)
- Learning differently
We can help you get the answers you need.
A guide to psychoeducational assessments
Psychoeducational assessments are specialized evaluations performed by trained professionals to understand a child’s cognitive, academic, and social-emotional functioning. They can help identify your child or teen’s:
- learning strengths and weaknesses
- potential learning disorders
- attention issues
- giftedness
Assessments also look at behavioral, emotional, and social factors that may impact a child’s learning.
The process includes a range of tests and observational techniques to understand your child’s learning style, processing abilities, and academic performance. The assessments tend to include IQ testing, academic achievement testing, memory, attention, and executive function assessments, as well as screening for emotional or behavioural issues.
Your child/teen may benefit from a psychoeducational assessment if they are:
- Struggling academically or showing a sudden drop in grades.
- Exhibiting difficulties in reading, writing, or math that seem inconsistent with their overall intelligence or effort.
- Having trouble paying attention, are easily distracted, or appear hyperactive.
- Experiencing social issues, like excessive anxiety or difficulty relating to peers.
- Showing signs of being advanced or gifted, such as performing well beyond grade level or expressing boredom with age-appropriate material.
- Learning disabilities like dyslexia, dysgraphia, or dyscalculia.
- Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).
- Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).
- Emotional or behavioural issues that may be impacting academic performance.
- Giftedness and areas of exceptional strength.
- Collaborate with your child’s school to implement an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) or a 504 Plan, which offer accommodations and modifications to support your child’s learning needs.
- Seek specialized educational services or therapies like speech and language therapy, occupational therapy, or counselling.
- Look for enrichment programs or advanced learning opportunities if your child is identified as gifted.

Our Approach
How psychoeducational assessments work
Intake session
We listen to the specific concerns you have about your child/teen and get to know their struggles to help us decide which type of assessment will be the most helpful.
Testing & questionnaires
We will meet in person with you and your child/teen for a total of 6-8 hours. Oftentimes questionnaires will be given to parents, guardians and teachers for further assessment.
Feedback & support
We tailor the assessment and subsequent support to your child/teen’s specific needs. About 6 weeks after the final session, we have a final meeting to present the results and feedback.
The results of the assessment will help you better understand your child/teen’s cognitive abilities and learning style. From there we can recommend academic modifications, therapies or lifestyle changes that will best support your child’s learning and development.
What you can expect
The ultimate goal of the assessment process is to provide a roadmap for supporting your child/teen’s unique learning and developmental needs. Most parents find that once they have the results of the assessment, they are less frustrated and feel more confident in how to help their child/teen.
- Improved academic performance
- More comfortable at school
- Reduced frustration
- Less anxiety
- Improved social relationships
- Greater self awareness
- Support for giftedness
- Feel more supported
Questions About Psychoeducational Assessments
A psychoeducational assessment will help you understand your child/teen’s learning, attention, and/or social-emotional profile. It uses standardized testing measures to evaluate your child’s verbal and nonverbal thinking and reasoning abilities (i.e., IQ) and academic achievement (e.g., reading, writing, math, oral language) as well as their memory, processing speed, visual-spatial processing, motor coordination, phonological processing, attention, and executive functioning skills.
