Psychoeducational Assessments

For Children and Teens

Learning Disability Testing

Is your child/teen struggling in school, despite trying hard? Is your child/teen struggling to acquire academic skills such as reading, writing, or math?

A psychoeducational assessment completed by Ethos Psychotherapy and Assessment Centre will help you and and your child/teen to better understand how they learn best and what accomodations and interventions they may need to support their learning.

Psychoeducational assessments use standardized measures to evaluate a child/teen’s thinking and reasoning abilities, underlying psychological processes (i.e., memory, attention, language skills, visual-motor integration, visual-spatial processing, phonological processing, processing speed, executive functioning skills), and academic achievement (e.g., reading, writing, math, oral language). This provides a deeper understanding of your child/teen’s unique learning profile.

Dyslexia and Dysgraphia Testing

Does your child/teen struggle to sound out words? Does your child/teen forget what common words look like and how to read/spell them? Does your child/teen struggle to read smoothly without errors? Does your child/teen struggle to write essays or longer pieces of work?

Dyslexia is a neurodevelopmental learning difference/disorder that affects the ease with which a child/teen reads, writes, and spells and is typically recognized as a specific learning disability. Dysgraphia is a neurodevelopmental learning difference in which someone has difficulty with writing. A psychoeducational assessment can help you and your child/teen figure out if your child/teen has dyslexia and/or dysgraphia.

Standardized testing will examine your child/teen’s reasoning and academic skills, as well as underlying processes related to reading and writing such as visual-motor coordination, phonological processing, memory, and executive functioning skills. This provides an understanding of your child/teen’s unique learning profile and the types of accommodations and interventions they may need to support their learning.

ADHD Testing

Does your child/teen struggle with focus? Do they have trouble starting and completing tasks? Are they often distracted, restless, or fidgety? Do they have trouble with planning and organizing?

An ADHD assessment will help you and your child/teen better understand how they think and learn best. Ethos Psychotherapy and Assessment Centre will complete a psychoeducational assessment using standardized measures to evaluate verbal and nonverbal thinking and reasoning abilities, memory skills, visual-motor coordination, and attention and executive functioning skills. Academic, behavioural and social-emotional functioning are also examined as ADHD often affects learning and is associated with anxiety.

ASD Testing

Does your child/teen have difficulty with showing an interest in playing/interacting with peers, engaging in back-and-forth conversations, having intense and specific interests, or engaging in repetitive behaviours? Do they have sensitivity to sounds, textures, tastes, sights, or smells, or have a lot of trouble with changing their routines?

An ASD assessment can help you and your child/teen assessments understand their unique neurodevelopmental profile and help you to better program for them at home and school. Typically, an ASD assessment evaluates a child/teen’s thinking and reasoning skills, language skills, and visual-motor coordination, as well as social and adaptive behaviour skills. The assessments are conducted through one-on-one testing with the child/teen, an ADOS (Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule) testing session with the child/teen, a developmental interview with the guardian(s), and with the use of questionnaires.

Gifted Testing

Are you wondering if your child/teen has very high intellectual ability? Does your child/teen learn fast and love to learn new things? Do they ask a lot of questions, or are very curious? Do they feel bored at school and struggle to pay attention?

If your child/teen is bored at school, it can be important to determine if they are intellectually advanced and require more challenges at school. At Ethos Psychotherapy and Assessment Centre we complete gifted assessments, which consist of standardized testing of your child/teen’s intellectual ability and, at times, some of their academic skills.
